We are a national nonprofit law center created in 1986 during the height of the 1980s farm crisis, when tens of thousands of families were losing their farms. FLAG attorneys stopped the foreclosures of 80,000 farms.

Since then, our services have broadened, and we now operate as a comprehensive public interest law firm serving family farmers. We perform outreach and education on laws and programs that help families sustain their farms; operate a national hotline offering free legal advice for family farmers; conduct impact litigation to help large numbers of family farmers by defending laws that protect them; provide legal services to farm advocacy organizations; and, many other important matters, including providing resources and information on disaster assistance programs to many family farmers every year.

FLAG’s ability to explain in plain language the complex provisions of disaster assistance programs has been crucial to helping thousands of farmers access the new and ever changing COVID-19 programs. Since the onset of the pandemic, 30,000 farmers and advocates have sought out our website to access the free guides that we have published explaining how programs work and how farmers can benefit from them (http://www.flaginc.org/covid-19-guide/). FLAG attorneys have also provided more than 20 trainings on critical issues that have reached thousands of farmers, trainers and advocates.
