NAP is run by the Farm Service Agency (also called FSA), part of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. NAP does not cover all of your financial losses due to natural disaster, but it will replace some of the lost income. Farmers are not required to participate in NAP. It is a voluntary program.

NOTE: In Minnesota, the deadline for most spring seeded crops (fresh vegetables) is March 15, 2016. The deadline to apply for NAP coverage depends upon where you farm and which crop(s) you plan to grow. Click here to learn more about NAP, farmer deadlines, and fees for NAP coverage.

[post_content] => Farmers’ Legal Action Group, Inc. (FLAG), is pleased to announce that it is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization into its next exciting phase. FLAG’s long-term Executive Director, Susan Stokes, is moving into a legal leadership position at FLAG. “It has been my honor and privilege to have been FLAG’s steward and Executive Director for the past ten years; but my real passion is the practice of law on behalf of family farmers, and I am eager to get back to that work.”

FLAG is a national nonprofit law firm dedicated to providing legal services and support to family farmers and their communities in order to help keep family farmers on the land. Founded in 1986, FLAG serves financially distressed family farmers and ranchers nationwide, working on issues such as credit, disaster relief, sustainable agriculture, contracts, leases, race discrimination, and other issues related to federal farm programs. Under Susan’s leadership, FLAG committed to providing more than half of its program capacity to serving historically underserved farmers. In 2013, FLAG was the recipient of the Anti-Racism Mission Award, awarded by the Minnesota Council for Nonprofits, for its ongoing work on behalf of immigrant farmers.

“We are extremely grateful to Susan for her ten years of exceptional leadership,” said Thom Petersen, President of FLAG’s Board of Directors, “and we also are excited about the opportunities ahead for the next Executive Director. We are pleased that Susan will continue to serve FLAG’s mission by focusing exclusively on legal work for family farmers.”

[post_content] => Recordkeeping is essential to the successful operation of any farm. However, a good recordkeeping system is one that you, the user, are comfortable with and is suited for your farming business. FLAG is pleased to announce the release of an updated farmers’ recordkeeping toolkit, Recordkeeping Instructions and Templates for Small-Scale Fruit and Vegetable Growers containing instructions and recording templates intended to be useful to small-scale fruit and vegetable farmers to track their farm activities.

Since the release of FLAG’s first recordkeeping packet in 2012, many farmers have used our templates to record their production and business information. We recently made some changes to the monthly operating expense template to reflect how most small-scale farmers run their business. For more information, please read the press release or just download the updated Recordkeeping Instructions and Templates for Small-Scale Fruit and Vegetable Growers.

Hli is being recognized for her years of providing legal services and a wide range of technical support to small-scale and underrepresented farmers, many of whom are Hmong Americans. “These distinguished lawyers represent some of the best in their field under the age of 40,” said NAPABA President George C. Chen. “As these 14 men and women continue to make strides in their respective careers, the pipeline for national Asian Pacific American leaders in the legal profession appears bright.”
